Day 2:
Visiting The Libearty Bear Sanctuary in Zărneşti
The sanctuary was created in order to rescue over 50 bears found suffering in cages around Romania where they had been used as pets or as attractions (e.g. for restaurants). The bears were all caught from the wild as cubs and had lived all their lives in confined cages. Until the Bear Sanctuary was created, Romanian authorities were unable to confiscate these bears due to the lack of facilities for caring the rescued animals.
Today there are over 70 rescued bears living in The Libearty Bear Sanctuary which consists of several large forested enclosures containing large fresh water pools, hibernation dens and hundreds of trees with lush natural vegetation.
Tours of visitors can be guided around the sanctuary while being told the story of the bear rescues. The bears live in large forested areas and it is their choice whether to stay inside the forest or come out to rest or play in the open meadow areas and pools.
The Libearty Bear Sanctuary is not a zoo and the welfare of the bears is the priority, but many bears are seen playing and resting near to the fences, so visitors generally are able to see these magnificent animals from a safe distance.
Visiting Bran Castle, known as Dracula’s home
After visiting Bear Sanctuary, we will stop for a visit at Bran Castle, known to many as Dracula’s Castle. Built in 14th century, Bran Castle has an impressive architecture, combining rock and wood.
First a medieval fortress, the castle became a summer residence of Queen Marie of Romania, in the 20th century. If you want to find both the legend and the truth about Bran Castle being Dracula’s home, take this guided tour to Transylvania! And if you want to know all about the famous character and historic figure, take a complete Dracula tour!
After visiting Bran Castle, we will travel back to Bucharest.
